When you start out as a mind full of mush and the sponge starts taking in things, at some point you get up the courage to ask a few questions. When Asking these questions to Preachers, Pastors, Reverends, Priest etc, and getting past the cliches, the last thing they say before they say “I don’t know,” they will reluctantly refer to this Phrase. “That is what they taught me in Seminary.”
Now, sometimes they will just kick you out of the building or gathering for asking a question where the answer may go against their denominational teaching or precepts, that is the Beliefs. Lets just say, been there and done that.
The biggest problem is the majority of church goers have no thought of studying anything they don’t understand. The only time they open their bible is at church. The bible class wont cover controversial things and the leader of the group will not go over the controversial things. As a matter of course, they will continue the party line.
Here is a question: Does the congregation go to church because the leader is there or does the leader go to church because the congregation is there? You can add a little to this question by adding a day. Saturday, Sunday, Holidays, Wednesdays. For example: Do the people go to church on Saturday because the Pastor is there, or does the Pastor go to church on Saturday because the congregation is there? Oh wait, you didn’t know that folks went to church on Saturday?
Why do some go on Saturday, others go on Sunday, still others go on Friday?
Hebrews 10:25 …Not Forsaking the Assembling of Ourselves Together, as a Custom of Certain…(Youngs Literal Translation)
When is the Assembling to take place? Let me use this math analogy which is prevalent thru out Faith Folks. A not so smart 5th grader is teaching his younger 1st grade brother how Multiplication is just like Addition. “2+2=4 and 3+3=6,” says the older brother to the younger. “And 2 x 2 = 4 and 3 x 3 = 6,” says the older brother to the younger. The younger brother now realizes that the Multiplication numbers are just like Addition and he can not wait to show how smart he is to all his friends. He goes and lets everyone know that when they get older they will learn Multiplication. And just to give them a heads up he tells others, “yeah, 2 x 2 = 4 and 3 x 3 = 6, it is just like Addition.” At some point he will learn the fallacy and be upset with his brother and all of his friends will be gone. Faith Folks are in the stage of the 1st grader because they keep hearing 2 x 2 = 4 and 3 x 3 = 6 in biblical knowledge and they may or may not go out and tell others.
Lets start with the 4th Commandment. But by the end this piece, You will notice it is not where the confusion or mess up really occurs.
The fourth Commandment>Exodus 20 Remember the Sabbath Day, to keep it Holy. Six Days you shall Labor and Do All your work, But the Seventh Day is a Sabbath of the Lord your G-d; in it you shall not do any work…..
You notice it says Seventh(7) Day. So the Sabbath is on the Seventh Day which in our calendar is Saturday. For the Jew, Orthodox and Messianic, Saturday is the Sabbath. There are several denominations in the US where they believe Saturday is the Sabbath.
The 1st day of the week is When the Catholic Denomination changed the Solemnity of the Sabbath from Saturday to Sunday. There are many books and series and such on this subject. Why would Protestant denominations who protested the Catholic Church, continue to use the Day which the Catholic Church started? Not going to get into that here, because as we are about to note, the day of the week is not even an issue.
Our Topic; Assembling Ourselves Together, Which Day is Church Day? Notice again the 4th Command. Notice that it is a command for a day of REST not a Day of Worship. The worshipping part is to actively Rest as commanded. There is NO ‘Go to Church Day’ commanded. But, But, Hebrews(possibly Paul) says “not forsaking the Assembling of yourselves together.” Good Point. What are the times of Assembling Yourselves together?
There were 3 Times the Israelites were instructed to Assemble together. 1. The Feast of Unleavened Things and 2. The Feast of the Harvest (1. Passover(14th Day of the First month) / 2. Feast of Weeks(15th day of the First month and the next 50 days—Pentecost.) and 3. Feast of InGathering/ Feast of Tabernacles(Booths)(15th Day of the Seventh Month and a few days before to a week after) For Example; 10th day of Seventh month is the Day of Atonement. All of this is in Leviticus 23. However this shortened version is in Exodus 23 starting at 14, with the main instruction at 17. In Questions, the Topic of Leviticus 23 proving Jesus goes further in to these times. But this is the Assembling Topic.
Lets continue. Within the Leviticus 23 Chapter, we find out that there is a Seventh day Sabbath of rest and there is separately Specific Days of the month for rest with out regard to the day of the week. For example. The 15th day of the First month is a Sabbath of solemn rest regardless what day of the week it falls. Also the 22nd day of the First month is a Sabbath. you could have a Seventh Day Sabbath and a 15th day of the First month Sabbath on the Same day. This happening is referred to by the Jews as a High Day. You could also have a Seventh Day Sabbath preceded or preceding the 15th day of the first month. Are you getting this?
Pentecost is the 50th day after the Passover. Lets look at Leviticus 23 again and lets combine it with Exodus 12 talking about the Passover Lamb. Exodus says the one year old male lamb is to be picked unblemished on the 10th of the month and the whole ASSEMBLY of the Congregation of Israel shall kill it at Twilight on the 14th day of the month. Put this with Lev 23:12, …on the day when you wave the sheaf, you shall offer a male lamb one year old without defect for a burnt offering to the Lord. What does this Male Lamb without Defect/unblemished Represent? Jesus is referred to as the Wave Sheaf offering or First Fruits Offering. Jesus was, on the 10th day of the First month, found with No Fault by Pilate. and he was crucified on the 14th day of the month.
Here is the advanced stuff, get ready. Lev 23:15, You shall count for yourselves, from the day after the Sabbath, From the day when you brought in the Wave Sheaf offering: there shall be 7 Complete Sabbaths. 49 days. the next day is the 50 Day(Pentecost) Each of these 7 Sabbaths are referred to number wise so they know which one they are on. For example. the 7th week would be referred to as the Seventh of the Sabbaths. the 3rd one would be the Third of the Sabbaths. and the 1st one would be referred to as the First of the Sabbaths, meaning first of the Sabbath Weeks.
Here is the Payoff for reading this thing: Where have we seen First of the Sabbath Weeks or First of the Sabbaths? Funny you should ask.
From Youngs Literal Translation:
Matthew 28:1, and on the Eve of the Sabbaths, at the dawn, toward the First of the Sabbaths, came Mary the Magdalene, and the other Mary to see the sepulchre.
Mark 16:2, and early in the morning of the First of the Sabbaths, they come to the sepulchre, at the rising of the sun.
Mark 16:9, and He having Risen in the morning of the First of the Sabbaths, did appear firs to Mary the Magdalene, out of whom he had cast seven demons.
Luke 24:1, and on the First of the Sabbaths, at early dawn, they came to the tomb, bearing spices they made ready…
John 20:1, And on the First of the Sabbaths, Mary…
John 20:19, It being, therefore, evening, on that day, the First of the Sabbaths….
All of your life you have heard 2 x 2 = 4 and 3 x 3 = 6. except you heard it as:
ON ‘the First of the Sabbaths’, you heard it as ‘First Day of the Week’. It is and was the First day of the week, However, it is the First Day of the Sabbath Weeks. The particular day of the Week as in Saturday or Sunday was not relevant.
Most protestant leaders will say Sunday is the Lords Day. and the use Matthew, Mark, Luke and John on the First Day of the Week. Never have they said, First of the Sabbath Weeks. Never have they said there are 3 times a year to Assemble together. Other Protestant leaders who have a congregation who shows up on Saturday, will say that Sabbath is the day of worship. You wont find that anywhere in the bible. There is no DAY of The Week worship day.
Almost every time in the New Testament where the term Sabbath is used, it is referring to Sabbath Weeks Sabbath or lets call it Passover Sabbath, Unleavened Bread Sabbath, Day of Atonement Sabbath. The reason the people were together to do all the things where Jesus had dealings with people is that they were there to fulfill the Assembling Themselves Together instructions of the 3 times a year. When it talks about Jesus or Paul in the Synagogue reading every Sabbath, it is one of these Sabbaths. Another passage says reading DAILY. Was Jesus and Paul there because the Congregation was there or was the Congregation There because They were supposed to be there?
You just found out that 3 x 3 does not equal 6. Would you be willing to tell any of your friends this info? Wait Until Your Church Leader hears this one.
